My First Ever Book Signing Event Experience

Last year, National Book Store announced that the next author they are bringing here is none other than Gayle Forman. I was beyond ecstatic. I really, really wanted to go but the thought of school held me back (not that I am a hundred-percent-school-loving student). I've never been to an author signing before. Authors rarely come here in our country and even if they do, I still live far, far away from the venue. But now NBS have one in Cebu which is literally an island next to mine. A little far still and on a Sunday but then I found out classes the following day were suspended (yay!). Now my problem is, the last time I've been to Cebu was four years ago and I had companions then but now I'm going alone because my sister is in Manila. I don't know the place and I most definitely don't know.. the language. BUT! It's Gayle Forman. She is one of my most favorite contemporary authors and If I Stay and Where She Went are the first ever contemporaries I've absolutely loved and the reason why I've been a little into contemporaries eversince so I thought "Fck this, I'm going." Before 2013 ended, I've booked my plane ticket to Cebu.

READING UPDATES! Oh, and I'm back..

Heyhey! Jusy checking in. I feel like my blog will become a ghost town soon if I don't do something about it. Remember how I said I'll try to be better with blogging a few weeks back? Well, I apologize because so far I'm not feeling that yet. Truth is, I have school - funny how a crapload of understanding can be acquired from that one word - but I really can't take that for granted.

My reading pace isn't also that impressive. In fact, I'm "3 books behind schedule" according to my Goodreads Reading Challenge meter and it's only January! Reasons: crappy schedule mainly due to these - school, club meetings, University Sportsfest, remaining exams, projects, club activities and outreaches; reading slump - I did just read more than a hundred books from last year; and unfortunate circumstances like being stuck alone in a city you are not familiar with - including the language - for two days because of a storm and the other books you are currently reading was left at home.. you make do with whatever you have. Lucky me I have 12. I finished two and was halfway through the third when my miracle in the form of a boat that would take me home finally arrived. Hallelujah! As much as I enjoyed my reading time (nothing else to do but eat, sleep and read - oh, and no interruptions!) I would choose to be back home over that.

Book Cover Battle: The Ruby Red Trilogy by Kerstin Gier

I could've made this post yesterday but just as I was about to start my classmate called and asked me where I was. It was around 2PM and I haven't had lunch yet so I told him I'll eat first then go back to school.. to play Bingo! It was my first time and I had a lot of fun even though I did not win. I had 5 playing cards, darn it! It would have been better if the guys shut up instead of hovering and saying "there goes another number here.. and there.. and another one there.." and "only two left on this card.. four here.." and "you're going to win" then discussing how we're gonna spend the prize. Did I mention how the letters and numbers were called off really fast? With my other classmate asking me to mark his card whenever his number comes up and the 5 I have, my neck, my eyes and my ears are hurting afterwards. I didn't know Bingo could be so exhausting.

Anyway, that's enough Bingo. Today is really about The Ruby Red Trilogy or the Precious Stone Trilogy cover battle. The series was originally written in German (Edelstein-Trilogie) and was translated into so many languages which means that it also has different covers for every edition.

Review: What's Left of Me by Kat Zhang

What's Left of Me
(The Hybrid Chronicles #1)
by Kat Zhang
Published: September 18, 2012

I should not exist. But I do.

Eva and Addie started out the same way as everyone else—two souls woven together in one body, taking turns controlling their movements as they learned how to walk, how to sing, how to dance. But as they grew, so did the worried whispers. Why aren’t they settling? Why isn’t one of them fading? The doctors ran tests, the neighbors shied away, and their parents begged for more time. Finally Addie was pronounced healthy and Eva was declared gone. Except, she wasn’t . . .

For the past three years, Eva has clung to the remnants of her life. Only Addie knows she’s still there, trapped inside their body. Then one day, they discover there may be a way for Eva to move again. The risks are unimaginable-hybrids are considered a threat to society, so if they are caught, Addie and Eva will be locked away with the others. And yet . . . for a chance to smile, to twirl, to speak, Eva will do anything.

Being Sloane Jacobs
by Lauren Morrill
Published: January 7, 2014
The Book Depository

______

Meet Sloane Emily Jacobs: a seriously stressed-out figure-skater from Washington, D.C., who choked during junior nationals and isn’t sure she’s ready for a comeback. What she does know is that she’d give anything to escape the mass of misery that is her life.

Now meet Sloane Devon Jacobs, a spunky ice hockey player from Philly who’s been suspended from her team for too many aggressive hip checks. Her punishment? Hockey camp, now, when she’s playing the worst she’s ever played. If she messes up? Her life will be over.

When the two Sloanes meet by chance in Montreal and decide to trade places for the summer, each girl thinks she’s the lucky one: no strangers to judge or laugh at Sloane Emily, no scouts expecting Sloane Devon to be a hero. But it didn’t occur to Sloane E. that while avoiding sequins and axels she might meet a hockey hottie—and Sloane D. never expected to run into a familiar (and very good-looking) face from home. It’s not long before the Sloanes discover that convincing people you’re someone else might be more difficult than being yourself.

[BLOG TOUR] Review + Giveaway: Savor by Kate Evangelista

Savor
(Vicious Feast #1)
by Kate Evangelista
Published: December 1, 2013

Amazon | Barnes & Noble

Mature and explicit content. Not recommended for readers below 18-years-old. Yup, you've got to be that old to read my story. Consider yourself warned.

I’m Dakota Collins, a tough talking, eye patch wearing, workaholic photography student. Why am I important? Well, maybe because I get to spend an entire month with Vicious, only the sickest indie rock band out there.

You see, I needed a subject for my Spring Showcase introspective in order to graduate. During a chance encounter at a club I’d been sent to cover for the Daily Gossip, our ironically named college paper, the features writer I usually teamed up with introduced me to the band—by accident, I might add. It involved a run in with a scary, bald bodyguard. Anyway, long story short, I signed a contract to take pictures of Vicious.

I should have known their handsome yet way too serious for his own good bassist, Luka Visraya, wouldn't be able to keep his hands to himself. He’s gorgeous and all, but the way he smiles spelled trouble with a capital L. I’m in for a long month with him around.

Crazy shit happens and then some. So, if you want the skinny on Vicious and the events revolving around my stay at Lunar Manor, read my story.

Again, refer to the warning above.

Review: How to Love by Katie Cotugno

How to Love
by Katie Cotugno
Published: October 1, 2013

Before: Reena Montero has loved Sawyer LeGrande for as long as she can remember: as natural as breathing, as endless as time. But he’s never seemed to notice that Reena even exists…until one day, impossibly, he does. Reena and Sawyer fall in messy, complicated love. But then Sawyer disappears from their humid Florida town without a word, leaving a devastated—and pregnant—Reena behind.

After: Almost three years have passed, and there’s a new love in Reena’s life: her daughter, Hannah. Reena’s gotten used to being without Sawyer, and she’s finally getting the hang of this strange, unexpected life. But just as swiftly and suddenly as he disappeared, Sawyer turns up again. Reena doesn’t want anything to do with him, though she’d be lying if she said Sawyer’s being back wasn’t stirring something in her. After everything that’s happened, can Reena really let herself love Sawyer LeGrande again?

In this breathtaking debut, Katie Cotugno weaves together the story of one couple falling in love—twice.

January 2014 TBR Pile

First month of a new year and I'm going to start this right. I have a lot of review books received last year that I really need to pick up especially since new ones are going to arrive in my mail soon. I'm really glad I joined Fiktshun's 2014 Review Pile Reading Challenge since, you know, additional motivation which I desperately need. For this month my TBR would consist mostly of review books that I will try my hardest to finish 100%. The ones on my list, that is. It would be impossible to finish them all in a such a short time since I am known to - unconsciously - stray from TBR lists I've made before.

The first book I picked up this month (also a part of my review pile TBR) and am currently reading in my laptop is:

December Reads + Monthly Recap + 2013 Wrap-up

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! It's 2014 now but even if that is the case, I still have a few things to say about 2013..

December was an incredibly busy month. We had our prelim exams, club outreaches and then Christmas break! I really hoped I would have time to catch up with blogging because of this. My mom had other plans, though. She made me do a lot of her office works (tons of encoding) since, yeaaaah, it's break. So I was only able to make.. like.. 10 posts?
