Me and My Bookshelf (28): I Broke My Book Buying Ban

This is where I feature the books I received, bought, gifted or won that are newly added in my physical shelf, which means no e-books and the like, and recount epic book hauling stories. It is usually posted on Saturdays.

I broke my book buying ban. Are you surprised? The last time I bought a book was way back in November last year when I went to Cebu to have my books signed by Marie Lu (majority of the books in my previous book haul posts were preorders).

So I lasted almost 3 months! I would have lasted longer except I saw these books for a cheap price and then the seller offered all of them for an even cheaper total. These books were in my Goodreads TBR for a long time and I don't want to pass up these good deals.

Review: A Little Something Different by Sandy Hall

A Little Something Different
by Sandy Hall
Published: August 26, 2014

The creative writing teacher, the delivery guy, the local Starbucks baristas, his best friend, her roommate, and the squirrel in the park all have one thing in common—they believe that Gabe and Lea should get together. Lea and Gabe are in the same creative writing class. They get the same pop culture references, order the same Chinese food, and hang out in the same places. Unfortunately, Lea is reserved, Gabe has issues, and despite their initial mutual crush, it looks like they are never going to work things out. But somehow even when nothing is going on, something is happening between them, and everyone can see it. Their creative writing teacher pushes them together. The baristas at Starbucks watch their relationship like a TV show. Their bus driver tells his wife about them. The waitress at the diner automatically seats them together. Even the squirrel who lives on the college green believes in their relationship.

Surely Gabe and Lea will figure out that they are meant to be together....

Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper is cynical and loyal, and she doesn’t think she’s the prettiest of her friends by a long shot. But things aren’t so great at home right now, and Bianca is desperate for a distraction. She ends up kissing Wesley. Worse, she likes it. Eager for escape, Bianca throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with him.

Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out Wesley isn’t such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she’s falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone.

I'll Meet You There
by Heather Demetrios
Published: February 3, 2015
The Book Depository
__________

If seventeen-year-old Skylar Evans were a typical Creek View girl, her future would involve a double-wide trailer, a baby on her hip, and the graveyard shift at Taco Bell. But after graduation, the only thing standing between straightedge Skylar and art school are three minimum-wage months of summer. Skylar can taste the freedom—that is, until her mother loses her job and everything starts coming apart. Torn between her dreams and the people she loves, Skylar realizes everything she’s ever worked for is on the line.

Nineteen-year-old Josh Mitchell had a different ticket out of Creek View: the Marines. But after his leg is blown off in Afghanistan, he returns home, a shell of the cocksure boy he used to be. What brings Skylar and Josh together is working at the Paradise—a quirky motel off California’s dusty Highway 99. Despite their differences, their shared isolation turns into an unexpected friendship and soon, something deeper.

Icy Pretty Love
by L.A Rose
Published: November 15, 2014

Glass-doll beauty. A shy, proper smile. Georgette Montgomery is the perfect billionaire’s fiancé.

Or she would be, if she existed.

A dark past. A smile that hides everything. At nineteen, Rae Grove escapes her disaster life by pretending to be other people—specifically, whoever the man paying her that night wants her to be.

Until she’s offered enough money for a one-way ticket to a better life. All she has to do is fly to Paris and pretend to be the fiancé of young business tycoon Cohen Ashworth for one month. Within an hour of meeting Cohen, Rae knows three things about him:

1. He hates everyone and everything.

2. He has abundant wit and a knife-sharp tongue.

3. He uses 2 to make everyone aware of 1.

Before long, Rae’s determined to crack open his unbreakable shell. Cohen’s determined to stay unbroken.

But no one escapes unscathed when two opposite worlds collide.

FINISHED DUOLOGIES

Initially, I wanted to do a finished series post that includes all the duologies, trilogies and series that I have finished reading but after I counted all of them -- all that I can remember anyway -- I realized there are a lot. Around 40 or so. So I'm going to break them down into parts and for now I am going to talk about the duologies I have read and that you might be interested in binge-reading if you are impatient for sequels. *cover image links to Goodreads*

Unraveling by Elizabeth Norris

Book 1: Unraveling - REVIEW
Book 1.5: Undone
Book 2: Unbreakable - REVIEW

One of my most favorite YA Sci-fi ever! Not to mention the super cool concept of a multiverse and the way the author made it so awesome and believable. It started with an accident that should have left the main character, Janelle, dead. She died, but for some unknown reason was brought back to life by Ben Michaels. Then she finds a clock counting down towards the end of the world and she tries to discover how it all connects. It's kick-ass. I didn't expect this to be duology (a fact I learned with only a hundred pages left in Unbreakable) and it made me sadder than I usually get when it comes to last books.
