Review: Spell Bound by Rachel Hawkins

Spell Bound (Hex Hall #3)

Hailed as “impossible to put down,” the Hex Hall series has both critics and teens cheering. With a winning combination of romance, action, magic and humor, this third volume will leave readers enchanted.

Just as Sophie Mercer has come to accept her extraordinary magical powers as a demon, the Prodigium Council strips them away. Now Sophie is defenseless, alone, and at the mercy of her sworn enemies—the Brannicks, a family of warrior women who hunt down the Prodigium. Or at least that’s what Sophie thinks, until she makes a surprising discovery. The Brannicks know an epic war is coming, and they believe Sophie is the only one powerful enough to stop the world from ending. But without her magic, Sophie isn’t as confident.

Sophie’s bound for one hell of a ride—can she get her powers back before it’s too late?

Lemme tell you something. I had no idea that I would fall madly in love with this series. It's about witches and they're only one of my fave fictional characters but I wasn't expecting it to get me like this. It took me by surprise and I loved it a lot that I immediately recommended it to my sister who then recommended it to her friends. One big laughing family. That's what made me love Hex Hall in the first place. The characters. Sophie made me laugh so hard I cried. Just imagine what a mess I was when Archer entered the picture.

Lucky me, the sequel, Demonglass, was already out when I finished Hex Hall. Not so lucky when it ended with a cliffhanger that made me absolutely crazy. So crazy that the moment I saw the hardcover copy of Spell Bound in front of me 10 months later, I was hyperventilating. In a bookstore. With many people inside. But not enough to turn heads, thank God. Or maybe it is, I'm just too preoccupied to notice. I was debating, of course. Rationally chanting to myself, "Don't let your emotions overpower you. You don't need to buy another hardcover. Besides, it won't match your copies at home. And you won't even have time to open it because this is a busy school year." And I'm like, screw it, I'm buying this. Now look at me. The paperback edition is already out and I just opened the copy I bought more than a year ago. But can you blame me? This is the last book! The last book I will ever get to spend time with a badass demon, or a super hot warlock, the hilarious but romantic moments they have together, or a 5 ft tall vampire with pink hair, or a family of red haired witches. Can I seriously give that up? Well, yes, but it would obviously take time. And how much time was that? Don't bother counting.

If the previous books made me spill tears laughing, Spell Bound was another story. It's a wonderful ending to the trilogy. I would miss the world-building, the snark, the magic, the romance (oh, the romance) but most especially the characters. They're so different from the other characters I've ever met. No boring parts even though Spell Bound has lesser snark than the previous two. Understandable. They're facing the end after all. But I miss it, is all. And did I mention the part where my heart was squeezed by Archer Cross? I mean, he's hot, he's hilarious, he makes me swoon, I want to be his girlfriend and I love him to death. But I loved him even more in that little glimpse I had of his past. I would love to add some snippets from the book but I'm afraid pausing is not an option. Not even to mark the pages where I found some memorable quotes.

Seeing as how I can't get enough of Rachel Hawkin's books, I am now halfway through with School Spirits. I recommend you go ahead and read her books, too, if you haven't already. You wouldn't like passing up the chance to have a really good time with the Prodigium dudes, I assure you.

  1. Awesome review!!! I loved this series as well and thought that Spell Bound was a perfect ending. Sophie was such an awesome character, I was rolling over from her snark! I read School Spirits as well and loved that one as well. I miss this series :( It's one of a rare example that I wish it was LONGER!!!
